THE AMAZING AESOP ROAD SHOW

One of the most successful touring shows ever mounted by the long-running Bookends troupe. For years THE AMAZING AESOP ROAD SHOW traveled all over the state of Alabama, delighting children with its madcap approach to recounting the timeless fables we all know and love.
Written to be performed by four people -- four inexhaustably energetic people -- the show can be performed in any large open space for audiences of any size. Special prop and costume tricks are a definite bonus but not essential.
The fables of Aesop are, of course, little moral lessons -- so the show's educational value is built-in. Our experience with the play has shown that the kids are thoroughly entertained by the performance, and get all the deeper messages as well.
BETA
You doing it with us this time, boss?
KAPPA
Yeah! This time I’m ready, so let’s all --
IOTA
Oh, and wouldn’t you know it? We are completely out of time! Maybe next year! So long kids!
IOTA starts off -- but this time SIGMA and BETA grab her and drag her back to KAPPA.
KAPPA
We have time for one final fable -- and I know just the one to end with. Because YOU remind me of someone in one of the greatest fables of Aesop ...
IOTA
Ah, yes. “The Story of The Beautiful Actress Who Played Hilarious Jokes on Her Friends and Everybody Loved Her.”
SIGMA AND BETA
Oh brother!
KAPPA
The story I’m thinking of is called “The Boy who Cried `Wolf’.” It’s all about somebody who MADE THINGS UP all the time and got everybody else worked up about nothing!
IOTA
What’s that got to do with me?
KAPPA pulls a shepherd’s crook (some assembly required) from the trunk and hands it to IOTA.
KAPPA
You get to be the Shepherd Boy.
(indicating the audience)
Start by standing over there.

SIGMA
Ladies and Gentlemen, for our final fable today we shall enact for you The Story of The Boy Who Cried `Wolf’!
KAPPA
Once upon a time there was a Shepherd Boy who kept watch over a flock of sheep near a small town.
IOTA
(to the audience)
Hey, you must be my sheep! Except I think sheep make some kind of sound, don’t they? What do sheep say?
KIDS
Baa! Baa!
IOTA
Okay! Great! Perfect! You can stop now.
